At the end of June, Logitech announced its new gaming keyboard, which I had the opportunity to test in EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre. The Logitech G515 openly stands out for its overall experience and for an important detail: it reduces the keystroke height to 22 mm, as it is a low-profile keyboard.

This device can be purchased in Spain for a price of 165 euros and in the cable version for 109.99 euros (although this will arrive at the end of the year). It has some aspects to highlight such as its soft touch, the ‘brown’ sound of its keys that makes it little noisy. It also has a fully customizable illumination for the best games and a battery that allows to reach 8 or 9 days of autonomy. without having to connect it to the USB connection of the PC with the cable that comes in the box.

In my case, always used to Logitech’s mechanical keyboards with cableI had my doubts about the autonomy, but leaving the RGB lighting configuration as it comes from the factory, I have forgotten about its charge to leave aside one of my biggest fears; especially for the habit of not having to be charging another device or peripheral more (as if we had few).

The logical advantage of being wireless is that you can move it back and forth and get a cable out of the way, so the desk is clearer and ‘cleaner’. This experience is nothing new, but I wanted to portray it in these lines to better understand my perspective on wireless keyboards, because I’m sure there are still many who are reluctant to use them.

I’m coming from using a Logitech mechanical keyboard with its high keys. and the ‘brown’ sound, so in these areas I was also a bit on the fence, especially since the Logitech G515 has keys that are half-height and are activated at a minimum distance of 1.3 mm and a total travel of 3.2 mm. A big change that I got used to faster than I thought: I ended up typing fast almost within minutes.

Hand posture is more naturaland here we can forget about having an extra cushion to keep the hand raised, as happens with the mechanical ones, which makes the wrist is not so hung as if it were in the ‘air’. An experience that benefits our joints in the long run and even more so when we are using a keyboard for hours and hours on a daily basis.

It offers a subtle touch that can be quickly enjoyed when typing. This is due to the PBT key caps with a subtle feel and great durability. This is another important fact, but it takes time to prove it, and Logitech keyboards tend to last a long time.

It is worth remembering that my previous keyboard, the G610, and which you can say that I ‘mistreated’ for years, there is still there, although some key has already been having a hard time. That said, there is another detail to take into account for the prolonged use that will be given in time: the keys are covered by a material that prevents corrosion. from water and possible oil marks.

Customization and illumination

A gaming keyboard needs functions to program keys, macros and those lighting effects that go along with the same colors used in the tower. Both manufacturers and Windows 11 have the necessary tools and experience to provide any peripheral or equipment with special lighting, and Logitech has the tools and experience with this keyboard. with 16.8 million colors available with the G HUB app.

From it you can configure a wide range of animations and effects.and download the same ones that can create the community of users of Logitech gaming keyboards. There are from those that have a programmed pattern to create an animation of great harmony and color, to others in which pressing any key generates an effect of color expansion to the rest of the keys.

Each key can be assigned a total of 15 functions. and from G Hub you can save the settings as well as profiles and activities for gaming, work or even streaming. This experience is very important to customize any action or macro to any key.

Autonomy

The Logitech G515 gaming keyboard allows us to try out these effects of great visual appeal, but it involves that the autonomy may suffer. If you prefer the convenience of leaving out the cable that comes in the box, which charges the keyboard in two hours, the battery life is more than enough for a week.

With the default light effect, with the W, A, S and D keys marked with a pink tone and the rest in a light blue, it consumes, using the keyboard for about 10 hours a day, between 8 or 9 days. Which is very good to forget about the cable to connect it to the PC and the desktop appears as clear as possible.

If you use some of its most striking effects, such as the color expansion that makes each keystroke the rest of the keys are bathed in the same all over the keyboard (a very cool effect), autonomy may suffer a little, but in general terms the G515 produces the sensation that 100% charged, you can forget about the cable. to connect it to the PC for several days; and coming from mechanical keyboards with cable, it is really appreciated.

Should I buy it?

After several weeks testing it and, of course, being an essential tool for work and leisure time on a PC with Windows 11 and a powerful NVIDIA RTX 4070 graphics card, for games like GTA Online, Diablo IV or Diablo II Resurrected, the experience on both sides is great since it is so nice in size, its color effects are eye-catching and it works so well and simply.

Yes there is problem with the Logitech G Hub update, which in my case blocked access to the keyboard settings for color effects and macros (luckily I was able to test them for a few days before the latest update).

Lastly, and most importantly, how it feels to type on a low-profile keyboard.I was used to the keys on Logitech’s mechanical G610 (which the poor thing has lasted me quite a while with some keys that went out of use); that was just what I was most reluctant about (with a very strong attachment to the vintage of the keyboard of the Amstrad CPC 464 or the Atari 520 ST that I once had as computers as a teenager).

And I can only say that the pose of the hand resting on the surface is more natural, the ergonomics of the design. makes typing faster and the sound (even the G610 being a brown) is very low so that it also produces a harmonious sound when typing in a row (here comes fast the GIF image of the kitten typing non-stop). A keyboard that already replaces my long-suffering Logitech G610 and evaporates one of the fears I had: replace a wireless with a wired keyboard.
